Folder Size Help

Version 1.20

The following sections are available in this help file:

Summary

Folder size can be used to view the size and number of files contained in a folder and it's sub-folders. It can show the following statistics for a folder and all of the sub-folders nested in that folder:

The currently displayed tree structure can be saved as a text file that Notepad can open.

The 'Show Files' button is used to display the files in a folder with optional date, size, and extension. This list can be copied to the clipboard and pasted into another program (like notepad, a word processor or a spreadsheet). If a file is dragged into Folder Size and 'Show Files' is used, the file is highlighted and Ctrl-C can be used to copy the filename onto the clipboard. This option is useful if you are describing a file and don't want to retype the filename. Drag the file onto Folder Size, use Ctrl-C to copy the filename, and then paste the filename into your application.

Starting Folder Size and selecting a folder

You can start Folder Size by dragging a folder or file onto the Folder Size shortcut icon. If a folder is used, the tree starting at that folder is displayed. If a file is dropped and the Option 'Auto Show files for dropped files' is checked, the files in the same folder as the dropped file are displayed and the dropped file is highlighted. If a file is dropped and the Option 'Auto Show files for dropped files' is not checked, the folder tree starting with the folder containing the file is displayed.

If you are using Windows 98 and drop a file on the Folder Size icon, the short path name is used (DOS compatible). If you drop a file into Folder Size when it is opened, the long path name is used.

You can also use the Select Folder button to select any folder on your computer.

Once Folder Size is opened, you can also drag and drop a folder or file into the Folder Size program.

The Parent Folder button can be used once Folder Size is opened to view the folder statistics for the parent folder and it's children. If no parent folder is available the button is disabled.

The Refresh button causes Folder size to recalculate and redisplay the folder tree. This is useful if you have made changes to folders and want to see the results in the folder tree.

Options

The Options button allows you to access various display and sorting options and access the 'Auto Show Files' button. The current set of options can be made the default by clicking on the Save Options button. The following display options are available:

CommandDisplay
Total SizeTotal size of files
Size on DiskDisk space taken up by files
Number of filesTotal number of files

The following units are available:

UnitsDisplayExample
AutoAutomatically choose the units329.13 Mb

Kb (Kilobytes)Display size in Kilobytes337,034.52 Kb

Gb (Gigabytes)Display size in Gigabytes0.32 Gb

Note that 1.00 Gb = 1024 Mb, 1.00 Mb = 1024 Kb and 1.00 Kb = 1024 bytes.

If Put size first is checked, then the size and file number information is put before the folder name.

The folders are sorted in ascending order unless Descending is checked. The following sort options are available:

SortSort byExample (ascending)
SizeSorts by file sizeDuck (22.00 Mb), cat ( 55.00 Mb)

The Auto Show files for dropped file option determines if the folder tree is displayed (not checked) or the files in the folder with the dropped file are displayed (checked).

Save in File

The currently displayed folder tree can be saved in a text file (.txt). You are prompted to select a file name. The folders and text that are currently being displayed are sent to that test file. The current Options settings and tree structure (that is which folders show sub-folders) determines what information is displayed and what information is sent to the text file.

Show Files

The Show Files button can be used to display all the files in the selected folder. The following options are available:

OptionAction
PathPath included at top
ExtensionFile extensions included
DateFile Dates included
SizeFile Size included (using current format)
FoldersSub folders included
SystemSystem files included
Sort bySort by Name, Date or Size in Ascending (<) or Descending (>) order

You can use the Copy All command to copy all the displayed file information into the clipboard to paste it into a document. You can also use Ctrl-C to copy any selected names onto the clipboard.

The Show Files button can be used to display the type of a specific file when the Folder Option 'Hide extensions for known file types' is checked. I usually leave this option on so that I don't have to retype the file extension when I rename files. Sometimes I want to determine the file type of a specific file. I can drag the file into Folder Size, do a Show file (if the Auto show files is not checked), make sure 'extension' is set and look at the highlighted file to see the extension.
